How to Wash a Faux Fur Jacket: Check the Backing and Drying Rules

Wash a faux fur jacket only using its garment-specific instructions. The pile, backing, lining and trim can react differently to water and heat. A soft synthetic surface does not by itself prove machine washability.

Inspect before cleaning

Check the label and look for detachable trim. Remove loose debris without pulling the pile. Examine seams and worn areas because cleaning can worsen an existing weak point. If the label requires professional care, do not substitute a home cycle based on fiber content alone.

For an authorized washable garment, follow the stated process and avoid excessive agitation or unapproved additives. Test compatible spot care on a hidden area. Judge the result only after drying.

Preserve the pile during drying

Use the authorized method and support the wet garment. Keep it away from concentrated heat unless the instructions specifically permit that exposure. Thick sections need enough time to dry through the backing and lining.

If brushing is recommended, choose the specified tool and work lightly after the appropriate drying stage. Aggressive brushing can pull fibers out. A pile that has been damaged by heat may not recover simply by combing.

How should faux fur be stored?

Store it dry with space around the pile and avoid prolonged crushing under heavy garments. A breathable cover can help with dust. Keep the jacket away from substances that could transfer to the fibers, and retain the care label for future cleaning rather than guessing from appearance.
