Wash a wool jacket at home only if its care instructions authorize it. Wool may be used in a washable casual fabric or in a structured tailored jacket with interlining and padding. Those garments should not share an assumed cleaning routine.
Read the garment's care method
Check the wool content, other fibers and the label's full instructions. Look for lining, bonded structure, decorative trim and removable components. A fabric swatch that tolerates washing does not establish that the finished jacket does.
Inspect stains and seams before cleaning. Remove loose dust gently. If professional care is required, explain the stain type and any earlier treatment. Avoid applying heat or an improvised cleaner to a small area without testing compatibility.
Follow an authorized wash carefully
Use only the permitted process, including temperature, handling and drying. Support the garment while wet and avoid pulling it into shape by force. Record measurements beforehand if you need to evaluate whether the garment changed.
Check the fully dried result for shape, texture and lining tension. Shrinkage, felting and construction distortion are different problems. Repeated washing does not reliably reverse them.
What maintenance helps between cleans?
Airing, gentle dust removal and prompt attention to marks can help. Store the jacket dry with adequate support and wardrobe space. For team garments, identify the exact style and care process rather than issuing one wool-care rule for both casual jackets and tailored outerwear.
