Start with gentle reshaping and hanging when a leather jacket becomes creased. Direct ironing, hot steam and a tumble dryer can damage leather or its coating. The safest next step depends on whether the crease is a temporary packing fold or a permanent change to the material.
Identify the type of crease
Empty pockets, close the jacket loosely and place it on a wide supportive hanger. Smooth the panels with your hands without stretching them. Allow ordinary packing creases time to relax. Avoid hanging the jacket by a narrow hook, which can create another distorted area.
Inspect the fold in good light. A line with cracking, whitening, peeling or a hardened ridge is different from a soft wrinkle. Do not repeatedly bend that line in an attempt to erase it. Photograph it for the maker or a leather cleaner.
Avoid improvised heat treatments
A household iron may exceed what the finish tolerates even through a towel. Bathroom steam adds uncontrolled moisture and heat. Do not treat either method as a general recommendation. If a manufacturer provides a pressing method for your exact garment, follow its conditions precisely.
For an expensive jacket or a deep crease, ask a leather specialist about professional reshaping. Explain the leather type and whether you already applied a cleaner or conditioner. Treatment history matters because heat can interact with products left on the surface.
Can conditioner remove wrinkles?
Conditioner is not a wrinkle eraser. It may change the feel of compatible leather, but it can also darken the surface. Prevent future creases by avoiding prolonged folded storage, overcrowded luggage and heavy objects on top of the jacket. Use padding around necessary travel folds.
