Can Leather Jackets Get Wet? What to Do After Rain

Leather jackets can become wet, but exposure may leave marks, change the finish or stiffen the material. Water resistance varies with the leather and treatment. A leather fashion jacket should not be treated as dependable rainwear unless its maker explicitly supports that use.

Respond promptly without adding heat

Move the jacket out of the rain and empty its pockets. Blot droplets with a soft absorbent cloth. Avoid rubbing, which can move dirt and dye across the surface. Do not wring the garment or force water out by tightly rolling it.

Hang it with its weight supported and allow air to circulate. Keep it away from radiators, hair dryers and strong sun. Check the lining and pocket bags as well as the outer leather. A surface that feels dry can conceal a damp interior.

Assess after it dries

Compare affected and unaffected panels. Look for tide marks, shrinkage, hard patches and color transfer. If the jacket changed shape or developed a broad stain, consult a leather cleaner before applying multiple products. Different finishes may need different corrective treatments.

Conditioning may be appropriate for some smooth leathers after drying, but it should follow the maker's advice. It is not a substitute for assessing damage. A general waterproofing spray can change suede, gloss or breathability, so test compatibility rather than spraying the whole jacket automatically.

What should you wear when rain is expected?

Choose a purpose-built rain shell for sustained exposure. If you carry a leather jacket for an evening indoors, protect it during travel and keep it separated from wet items. For team garments, specify weather performance before selecting leather solely for appearance.
