What Is a Corduroy Jacket? Fabric Ribs, Fit and Care

A corduroy jacket uses a fabric with raised parallel ribs, often called wales. Rib width, fiber composition and garment construction vary. A corduroy surface can appear on a full jacket or only on trim such as a collar.

Compare the fabric carefully

Look at the rib scale, surface softness and composition. Fine ribs and broad ribs create different appearances, but neither alone determines warmth. Check lining and insulation separately. Examine high-contact areas where the pile may show wear.

Consider color in different light. The raised texture can make shades appear lighter or darker depending on direction. When matching pieces or approving a bulk color, view a physical sample rather than relying on a screen image.

Fit and maintain the garment

Try the intended underlayer and check shoulders, cuffs and seated comfort. A thicker corduroy may feel bulkier at seams and pockets than a smooth textile. Assess the finished jacket, not just the fabric swatch.

Follow the exact care label, particularly when the jacket is tailored or combines materials. Avoid aggressive brushing or heat based on a generic cotton routine. Protect the texture during storage by avoiding long compression under heavy items.

Does rib count establish quality?

No. Rib scale is one design characteristic. Construction, composition, finish and intended use also matter. For production, specify the chosen fabric reference and approved appearance rather than using corduroy as a sufficient description for every later batch.
