How to Refluff a Down Jacket: Separate Damp Fill From Damage

A flat or clumped down jacket may need complete drying, gentle redistribution or a repair assessment. Refluffing is not one guaranteed technique. First determine whether the fill is damp, compressed or no longer held in the right place.

Inspect the pattern of flattening

Check whether the whole jacket is compressed or only one baffle is affected. After washing, damp clumps can feel dense and uneven. After storage, broadly flattened insulation may need time to recover. An empty panel next to a full one can suggest migration or internal damage.

Read the care label before applying heat. A familiar drying trick is not appropriate if the shell or trim forbids the process. Ask the maker when the instructions are unclear.

Use the authorized recovery method

If drying is still required, follow the permitted process and confirm dryness throughout. If the garment is already dry, allow it room to recover and gently redistribute only as instructed. Avoid aggressively pulling baffles or forcing fill through seam lines.

Inspect the final result after it settles. If one area remains consistently empty, check for lost fill or a failed internal divider. Repeating dryer cycles does not rebuild insulation that has escaped.

How can you prevent repeat flattening?

Store the jacket dry and with adequate space between trips. Reserve strong compression for necessary transport. Keep damage repaired and record the care method used. A comfortable lofted appearance should be evaluated across the whole jacket, not just the largest torso panel.
