How to Reproof a Rain Jacket: Diagnose Wetting-Out Before Treating

Reproof a rain jacket by first identifying what has stopped working. Surface water repellency, seam sealing and the waterproof barrier perform different roles. A treatment intended for the outer surface will not repair a tear or detached seam tape.

Locate the symptom

Check whether the outer fabric absorbs water, whether moisture enters at a seam or whether the inside becomes damp during activity. Inspect worn shoulders and backpack contact areas. Note the conditions and location rather than describing every problem as leaking.

Clean the garment using its authorized method before deciding on treatment. Dirt and residue can complicate assessment. Follow any compatible drying or reactivation instructions for the exact system.

Choose a compatible treatment

Use the garment maker's guidance to select a spray-on, wash-in or other permitted product. Some constructions have exclusions. Follow application, quantity and curing directions rather than adding extra layers for reassurance.

After treatment, examine the result under a controlled simple surface check. Beading is useful evidence of the outer treatment, but it is not a complete waterproof test of the finished garment. Avoid claiming a home spray check proves a performance rating.

When should the jacket be repaired?

Seek an assessment for damaged seams, delamination or holes. Keep treatment history because it may help the maker diagnose the issue. For new bulk purchases, request relevant garment-level evidence before relying on a promise that all performance problems can be fixed by future reproofing.
