How to Get Paint Out of a Jacket: Identify the Paint Before Treating It

Removing paint from a jacket depends on the paint type, whether it has dried, and the garment's fabric and finish. Water-based paint and solvent-based paint require different approaches. Read both the paint container's cleanup instructions and the jacket's care label before choosing a treatment.

Remove excess without spreading it

For fresh paint, lift excess gently with a blunt edge, working to keep the stain contained. Do not rub it deeper into the fibers. Put a clean absorbent material behind the area where the garment's construction permits it, keeping the lining separate.

If the paint is water-based and the jacket permits water treatment, use an approved gentle method promptly. Follow the product's cleanup advice and the garment's care limits. Do not assume water alone will remove a dried film.

Avoid unverified solvents

Solvent-based paint may require a cleaner that is unsuitable for the jacket. Do not apply paint thinner, acetone or another strong solvent just because it cleans a brush. It can affect color, coatings, synthetic fibers or glued construction.

For leather, suede, delicate wool or technical shells, contact a suitable cleaner. Provide the paint product name and explain any treatment already attempted. This helps them assess the stain rather than guessing its chemistry.

What should happen before drying?

Inspect the stained area after any permitted cleaning. Do not apply extra heat while paint remains; it can complicate later removal or damage the surface. Dried paint may leave a mark even after treatment. Consider a controlled visible repair when full stain removal would risk a larger area of the jacket.
