How to Fold a Puffer Jacket for Packing and Storage

Fold a puffer jacket gently and compress it only as much as needed for the trip. A short packing period and long-term storage have different requirements. The fill, shell and maker's packing instructions should guide the method.

Prepare the garment

Ensure the fill and lining are completely dry. Empty pockets and inspect for damage. Close hardware as directed and smooth the jacket without pulling on baffles. Protect delicate prints or raised trim from rubbing against zippers.

Fold sleeves inward using broad bends, then fold the body to suit the bag or pouch. Do not force an oversized bundle into a tiny compartment. If the jacket has a designated stuff pocket, follow that construction instead of choosing a random pocket.

Decide how much compression is necessary

For travel, reduce volume enough to fit while keeping sharp objects away from the shell. Unpack when you arrive and allow the jacket to recover its shape. Avoid leaving it under heavy luggage for weeks after the journey ends.

For seasonal storage, use a roomy position that does not keep insulation tightly flattened. A breathable storage space and a dry garment are more important than a perfectly compact fold.

Does every puffer pack into its pocket?

No. An ordinary pocket may not be designed as a storage sack. Forcing the whole jacket inside can strain seams or the zipper. Check the maker's description or instructions. A separate appropriately sized bag is preferable when the garment has no dedicated packing feature.
