Repair a down jacket tear promptly so it does not enlarge or release more fill. The method depends on the shell fabric, tear location and whether the baffle or lining is damaged. A repair patch suitable for one fabric may not adhere to another.
Inspect before handling the tear
Stop wearing the jacket if movement pulls the opening wider. Do not tug out down protruding from the hole. Photograph the damage and examine the surrounding fabric. A tear beside a seam or zipper may carry more stress than one on a flat panel.
Check the maker's repair service or recommended patch material. Avoid applying household glue or adhesive tape that leaves residue. Such treatments can make a later professional repair harder.
Prepare a compatible repair
Follow the patch system's instructions for cleaning, drying, shape and overlap. Rounded patch corners can reduce snagging when the product supports that method. Keep the area flat without stretching the shell. Do not trap loose debris under the patch.
After application, respect the specified settling time and inspect adhesion at the edges. Recheck during wear. A patch may close the surface while an internal baffle still needs repair, so watch for fill migration.
When is professional work needed?
Use it for large tears, seam failures, worn fabric or damage around important hardware. Ask whether the repair preserves the original weather performance. For a team order, record the damage location and cause so repeated failures can be investigated rather than patched indefinitely.
