How to Clean a Shearling Jacket: Protect Both Wool and Leather

Cleaning a shearling jacket requires attention to both the wool surface and the leather side. The two surfaces are part of a material that can react unevenly to moisture and cleaning products. Start with the garment's own instructions.

Inspect the affected surface

Determine whether the mark is on the wool, leather or both. Remove loose debris gently without pulling the wool. Check whether the jacket includes textile linings, dyed trim or decorative finishes that need separate treatment.

Blot a fresh spill lightly with a clean absorbent cloth and avoid spreading it. Do not scrub the wet area or saturate the surrounding material. Note the spill type and take a photograph for a cleaner if the mark remains.

Avoid treating it like ordinary fleece

A fluffy interior does not mean the garment can follow a polyester fleece washing routine. Immersion, strong heat and wringing can change shape and texture. Use a specialist who handles shearling if the label requires professional care or if the stain is substantial.

Ask about cleaning both surfaces, preserving color and maintaining flexibility. Explain any home product already used. For a jacket that has become stiff after wetting, ask for an assessment rather than adding a generic conditioner to the wool and leather together.

How should it dry and be stored?

Follow the maker's drying guidance and avoid concentrated heat. Support the garment's weight so wet or heavy panels do not stretch. Store only when fully dry, with room around it. Treat recurring dampness in the storage area as a separate problem that cleaning alone will not solve.
