Pin a boutonniere by supporting its stem on the lapel and keeping the fastening concealed where possible. The flower should sit securely without dragging the lapel out of shape. Check the venue's preference and the jacket's buttonhole before starting.
Plan the position
Traditionally, a boutonniere is worn on the left lapel. Some jackets have a usable lapel buttonhole and a supporting loop behind it, while others need a pin. Inspect the construction rather than forcing a thick stem through a decorative or unopened feature.
Arrange the flower against the jacket while it is worn or supported in its natural shape. Check scale in a mirror. A heavy arrangement may need adjustment by the florist so the fastening does not carry excessive weight.
Fasten carefully
Keep the pin path controlled and protect the wearer from the point. Secure the stem and fabric as the arrangement requires, keeping the pin concealed. Do not push through many layers blindly. Check the inside after fastening so no point can scratch the wearer.
Move gently and confirm that the flower remains upright. Avoid repeated repositioning that creates unnecessary holes, especially in delicate cloth. Take the flower off before storing or cleaning the jacket.
Can a magnet be used?
Some arrangements use magnetic holders, but suitability depends on the garment and wearer. Follow the holder's instructions and relevant restrictions. Choose a fastening that supports the flower without damaging the lapel, rather than assuming one method works for every event jacket.
