How to Fold a Leather Jacket for a Short Trip

Fold a leather jacket only as much as needed for travel, using broad folds and light padding. Hanging is usually more suitable for extended storage. Packing should reduce pressure on the finish, hardware and shoulder shape.

Prepare before folding

Make sure the jacket and lining are dry. Empty pockets and close hardware so it does not scrape adjacent panels. Place the jacket on a clean smooth surface. Inspect raised decorations or metal parts that need protection.

Lay the sleeves naturally across the body without sharply bending them at one point. Add a soft clean layer where panels meet if the finish may rub. Use a broad fold through the body and avoid compressing the collar into a tight crease.

Position it carefully in luggage

Put the folded jacket where it will not carry the weight of shoes or hard equipment. Do not force it into a compartment smaller than the folded shape. A tight roll may save space but can create persistent pressure lines.

Unpack soon after arrival and hang it with shoulder support. Let soft travel creases relax naturally. Do not immediately use an iron or steam to correct a fold. Deep creases or surface cracking need a material-specific assessment.

Is folding suitable for every leather jacket?

No. Stiff, heavily decorated and unusually coated jackets may be better carried on a hanger or in a garment bag. Choose packing based on construction and the length of the journey. If the jacket must remain presentation-ready, plan transport around it rather than expecting a crease-free result from tight luggage.
