How to Store a Leather Jacket Between Seasons

Store a leather jacket clean, fully dry and supported at the shoulders. Give it breathing room and avoid prolonged compression. Storage should protect both the leather surface and the garment's shape.

Prepare it before putting it away

Empty every pocket and inspect the lining, cuffs and collar. Address fresh stains promptly with a method appropriate to the finish. Let damp areas dry completely. Record any repair still needed, such as a loose zipper end or worn cuff seam.

Do not apply conditioner merely because the season is changing. Use it only if suitable for the leather and recommended for its condition. Residue can transfer to a cover or to adjacent garments.

Choose a suitable storage position

Use a broad hanger that supports the shoulder shape without stretching it. A long-term fold can create persistent creases. Keep the jacket away from direct sunlight, damp walls and heating vents. Leave space so nearby clothing does not flatten the sleeves and collar.

A breathable garment cover can protect from dust. Avoid sealing a damp garment in plastic. Check stored jackets periodically rather than leaving them untouched through changing household conditions. If you notice a musty smell, inspect the storage environment and the garment.

Can it be stored in a suitcase?

Short travel is different from seasonal storage. If folding is unavoidable, use broad gentle folds and light padding, keep the jacket dry, and unpack promptly. Do not place heavy shoes or equipment on top of it. A storage method that fits a shelf is useful only if it also preserves the garment.
